Spring/Summer 2012 Menswear Fashion Show from... by afp-fashion

The theme of the collection and presentation, "war heroes turn into heroes of peace", runs full force and relevant in Lanvin Men's fashion show, which just showed in Paris. This is a standout menswear collection and another personal favorite. Alber Elbaz and Lucas Ossendrijver present a cohesive and extremely wearable collection.
I love the color palette and its evolution, from rich and deep browns, to washed navy (almost chambray), black (and the exquisite leather and that covetable patent leather blazer), to a burst of color to close out the collection. I also love how the fabrics change from hard to soft, from the leathers to knit wool, to prints and tie-dye, to silks and jersey cotton. I also love how the style moves through the presentation, which you will notice how each look goes from "buttoned up" (ie boots, jacket, tie, etc) to "loosened up" (ie sandals, layered looks, color, soft textures).
The collection, rooted in an ideal of the strength and austerity of the "hero" man, hits all the right targets, I believe, by showing us both the hard and the soft, and the dark and the colorful side of the modern man's wardrobe.

I Thought I Lost You, Louboutin!

Christian Louboutin boutique in West Hollywood/LA
As I drove down Burton Way in Beverly Hills the other day, I looked to my left and gasped when I saw the Christian Louboutin boutique shut and empty! Could that be why the women at the Saks Fifth Avenue Ladies Shoe Salon were lined up in droves in utter anticipation to get themselves a pair of Louboutins because the shop is no more last week (no, its because they're 50% off!!)? With a little investigation and a quick telephone call, I found out that they have moved to a much needed new and larger space to showcase the designer shoes. Last Fall (that just goes to show you where my shoe priorities have been).  The new boutique, at 650 N Robertson Blvd, between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Blvd, ups the fashion quotient of the boulevard, which has been getting a much needed economic boost in recent times in the more traffic-heavy parts of it. With Philip Lim, John Varvatos, and Maxfield very very nearby, your one-stop neighborhood shopping destination gets finished completely, from head to red-soled toe.

Versace's Edge and Glory lives on in "Edge of Glory"

Monday, June 27, 2011

For me, there is no denying my fascination and attraction to Lady Gaga's second release from her recent "Born This Way" album: it's the vintage Versace she wears in this sparse and down-played and "retro" feeling music video for "Edge of Glory". And to know that Donatella Versace opened up the house archives and has allowed Lady Gaga to use actual pieces from them is amazing. This, mixed with the recent news of Versace's H&M collaboration in which Donatella will re-interpret archived pieces in it, and the loaning of archived pieces for Gaga's promotional outings as well really does have me wondering if there is going to be a larger, direct release of archival items through the luxury brand's outposts or even an artistic exhibition coming soon (I believe its looong overdue). Yes, please, and may it be so!

"Brothers of Arcadia"--a short film presented by Mugler Menswear

0

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Nicola Formichetti brings his bad-ass-ness back and this time its for the guys. Combining myth, legend, and lore and titillating imagery, Mugler Menswear brings us "Brothers of Arcadia" a provocative conceptualization for Spring 2012. Formichetti says about the film:

“I was interested in the idea of fantasy, dreams and voyeurism. I was looking at Italian Neo-Realist cinema and then, post-that, where Fellini and Pasolini become more about myth and fantasy. At the same time, I loved the idea and accessibility of pornography and everyday voyeurism on Xtube. Fashion is always referencing pornography, so there was an element in doing this film of just ‘cutting out the middleman,’ but it is an erotic fashion film nonetheless.”

Call it what you will--guerilla marketing or digital art or cinema sexualite--one thing is for sure, you have our attention Mr. Formichetti. The film, to me, is a moving and lyrical fashion ballet of sorts, moving its way from classic beauty to our new hyper-ideal of it. Its varied references of "Caligula", Madonna's art book "Sex", vintage homoerotica, and 1990's underground/downtown/club fantasy world all come together in an interesting and definitely provocative way. It pushes an envelope without losing the focus on its focus: Mugler Menswear (albeit without showing much of the collection itself). Instead, the ideals and essence of the collection is showcased. And its not really about sex, its about the sensuality of style, in my opinion. See for yourself and enjoy.

BLK DNM | A Johan Lindeberg Project

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

Never one to shun or shy away from amazing contemporary basics, I am always on the look out for brands that keep it simple, clean, and directional to help me keep mine and my clients' wardrobe sleek and streamlined. Johan Lindeberg, aka J Lindeberg, has launched, with perfect perfection in my opinion, a new venture and one of the best contemporary basics line around nowadays. With great offerings for men and women, and keeping everything in a sleek and simple vein, Lindeberg's BLK DNM label has something for absolutely everyone: tailored pieces, denim, knits, sweaters...all the items are made of the highest quality and with distinct details and finishing. There is also a great "newspaper" called "gazette" that is worth getting a copy of as it is a genius bit of marketing and an artistic rendering of the label. With a pop-up store in NYC's SoHo district, BLK DNM keeps it even more cool. And to make sure the cool transcends, they do have a website and e-commerce so you too can get a piece-- BLK DNM | A Johan Lindeberg Project.
Sometimes its too easy to look good and cool at the same time and with BLK DNM, you're killin' it kindly.

Versace for H&M

1

As a long time collector and avid fan of Versace, the news of the luxury brands soon to launch collaboration with mega-retailer H&M is one of elation and surprise. With the rise of luxury brands doing high-street fashion becoming ever more prevalent, this move by Versace says, in a clear way to me even more than the great Lanvin x H&M collection last Fall, that no one in any luxury realm cannot ignore the lure and buzz of doing fashion-for-the-masses. With Donatella pulling from the vast Versace archives for inspiration/looks for this collection, its sure to be an interesting and hopefully well-round storytelling retail venture. I'm sure to get a few pieces to add to my personal Versace collection, which dates back to the early 80s. It will be an interesting addition to my archives and I can't wait to see what the H&M Collection says about the direction and future of the Versace brand, and to see how it will instill lust for its luxury brand to the masses.

A Slice of L.A. LifeStyle

Here is an interesting and great peek at the many slices of Los Angeles style from the Los Angeles Times Image Section. It just goes to show the many different facets of style and people who populate the area, and is a look into what makes this city unique and unusual in its style approach:

Enjoy, as I have!

Outspoken, talented, strong, irreverent, individual, inspiring. Florence Welch, lead singer and style maven of the band Florence and the Machine, continues to push envelopes and raise the style quotient with each outing she undertakes. I can't wait to see what she wears next because she's always fun and a classy rockin' lady.

Haider Ackermann, fashion designer
Haider Ackermann does it again this year and continues to push the envelope and ideals of designer dressing with his Fall collection.  I had the honor recently to meet him and view the collection and was totally amazed by his artistry, detail, and candor. His aesthetic is one of the few which is distinct and uniquely his own, with an eye on classicism, modernism, and the future. He continues to design with his customer in mind ( like Janet Jackson and Tilda Swinton) as well as the new fans his work will continue to garner him.

Model Muggle: Emma Covers US Vogue

Emma Watson puts us all under her spell again on the cover of Vogue's July issue. This is the first time she makes the coveted magazine's cover, but not her first time to cover a Vogue magazine, having donned both Vogue Italia and Vogue UK and doing two great editorials in each of them. This month's editorial shows a decidedly grown-up version of Emma, wearing key pieces from the Fall collections. I'm sure this is just the first of many major covers we'll see her on, as she closes out her run in the Harry Potter film series this summer and begins her new journeys in her young adult life. Enjoy!

Andrej Pejic, one of today's most beautiful HUMAN models
(photo via StyleCaster)

All I have to say is, FHM Magazine, WOW. It takes major, um, you know, to even have written that. At least they apologised, right (see below)??

We all have to remember, that Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder AND simply as Beauty itself. Our societal standards of beauty are in fact shifting and evolving to encompass all kinds of beautiful, because it is diverse and distinct and mysterious, inspirational, simply complex and, frankly human.

And let's not forget: Beauty is as Beauty does.
