Rodarte: States of Matter from MOCA on Vimeo.

Recently, M and I explored the first art presentation of fashion and costume designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy, also known as Rodarte, at MOCA Pacific Design Center. This video perfectly captures the exhibit, which is very impressive for its small/large scope and for the up-close details you get to experience in Rodarte's fantastic and intricate design work. Definitely not a show to miss if you are in Los Angeles and a purveyor of design, fashion, and art. And what better way than to witness fashion as art, for what it really is, through the focused and genius eyes of Rodarte.
Enjoy!

Dior's new designer, Riccardo Tisci
(photo via www.refinery29.com)
It has been confirmed that Givenchy's designer, Ricardo Tisci, has been promoted to Dior to replace John Galliano.
It will be very interesting to see how Tisci moves Dior forward, as he has very large shoes to fill, and to see how he evolves the label in new and different directions, like he does for Givenchy.

Congratulations Mr. Tisci!!

Kristen McMenamy

The Era of the Supermodel brought us many prolific and famous faces (Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, etc) but none more distinct and original as the illustrious Kristen McMenamy. Her strong, androgynous features and quirky personality brought her to the forefront of modeling in the 80s and 90s. I love how she always changed, cameleon-like, in any of her guises yet remained other-wordly and simply gorgeous. I'm so happy to be enjoying her return again, from campaigns to editorials to runway shows, La Kristen is back (she never really went away to me)!!
Here's lookin' at you, Love...

Battalion: Los Angeles

a look from Battalion's S/S 2011 Collection
(image via www.thebattalion.us)
There are very few cases of a brand presenting a well thought out and conceptualized collection and being able to say that its materials, fabrics, and presentation are sourced through sustainable means and helping its local economy by bringing jobs to it, all consciously and stylishly, like Los Angeles based designer Battalion.

Founded by designer Linda Wong, her label Battalion hits the mark perfectly of being a "purveyor of green luxury" through its modern, clean aesthetic and by its thoughtful approach in its concept and production. Using sustainably sourced natural materials like bamboo and organic cotton. These materials lend themselves to designs that are fresh takes on modern luxury staples and unique, one-of-a kind pieces. The collections speak so well to my own modern contemporary personal style and its message of eco-consciousness flows perfectly with my own approach to modern living. The combination of the two couldn't be more potent, and, more winning. Battalion is marching on the front lines in the fashion battle of eco-luxury, and successfully turning the tide of the industry, one collection at a time.

Manifesto Destiny

2

Sunday, March 6, 2011

On Saturday, YSL distributed their limited edition Spring 2011 "Manifesto", a comprehensive look at the Spring Collection, photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinood Matadin, throughout various "secret" locations around Los Angeles. This is the first time the venerable design house has presented the manifesto in LA. I had been on the search for the locations for weeks (as soon as I heard the news that LA would be getting the Manifesto) with no prevailing information given to me (go figure), so I simply made a kind request to the PR powers-that-be to be a dear and deliver it to me, "I'll be at a particular place at a particular time", in a half-mocking tone but with wholehearted aplomb. To my great and sheer surprise, a young woman from YSL came to me with the Manifesto and tote in hand to hand deliver one to me, at the particular place I was at at the particular time I suggested, with kind regards, and said a special gift will be delivered to me in the following week, part of the Manifesto package. Then I saw them descend upon the location like YSL clad angels: the Manifesto street team. I watched in awe as they handed out the coveted tote and Manifestos to very unsuspecting and overly jubilant passerby. It was great to not only be gifted with this but to be a witness to a fashion moment, a first of many for LA (I hope). Receiving a copy of this season's Manifesto is such a great surprise. Surprise is actually putting it mildly. I'm beyond the beyond overjoyed. I'm in complete awe in how asking for something kindly and sincerely actually works when you least expect it. Believe me when I say that someone at YSL is getting a lovely floral arrangement and a Dayna Decker candle gift set this week, hand delivered by me. In fair kind, right?
And in the spirit of the good and fair kind, I am giving away a copy of the YSL Manifesto to one lucky winner in a contest to begin on Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Please visit then for more information and to enter. Good luck!!

The William B + Friends Mobile Shop in Los Angeles
I have just discovered a very unique and smart new way to shop here in the wide world of Los Angeles retail, and it couldn't be more ingenious: the William B + Friends Mobile Truck. With the recent proliferation of gourmet food trucks all over town, it was just a matter of time that someone would apply the same concept to another commercial venue. And fashion retail is the obvious choice. The William B + Friends Mobile Shop brings all the things you'd love about a brick and mortar retail store (visual merchandising, clothing, accessories, home goods, great service) right to you (or at a rotating pop-up location). And, whats even better, you get great prices on a variety of brands all the time (up to 75% off: true sample sale prices!)!! Make sure you click the link above and follow them to find out when the sale is going to be near you!

Variations on a Theme: Galliano

1

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

The distressing and sad news of John Galliano's outre from Dior comes out of a strange and tragic turn of events. We cannot, as style mavens and self-proclaimed fashionistas, ignore the fact that Mr. Galliano is a telent and a fashion tour de force to be reckoned with. No matter what, he turned out a stunning ouvre for Dior and has kept the venerable French house relevant, fresh, and alive with creativity and artistry. His shows for the house were always at the highest level, and he brought "show" to the presentations (whether it was RTW, Resort, or Couture) with full theatricality and highly creative execution. And NO ONE exited their own show in his way: John Galliano's greatest catwalk costumes

Wishes of wellness and health to him. I await his triumphant return...

Hello, Nice to Meet You Generation Y

0

The question of Generation Y, or, better known as the "Hipster Generation", has been turning around in my mind over and over again and I've come to realize that I know very little intimately about this generation that follows mine. I see these hipsters everywhere. Standing alone, gathered in groups, in their Minis and Priuses, riding their one speed bikes, drinking skinny lattes, wearing skinny jeans and vintage clothing...Hipsters, please stand up and introduce yourselves to me!

My generation, Gen X, brought to the cultural forefront many different things: rave culture, minimalism, RuPaul, MTV, the early beginnings of video games and home computers, Prepsters, the pop supremacy of U2, Madonna, and Michael Jackson, leggings, Neo Soul music, and double denim dressing.

What's going on with Generation Y? Ok, I must thank you for the skinny jeans movement (I'm a BIG fan) and the return of vintage clothing popularity (especially designer vintage), high/low dressing, and eco-conscious products and practices. But tell me what is up with the unkempt hair and grooming (beards, moustaches, and goatees, oh my!!!), sub-par social etiquette, vapid demeanor and disdain for society and the global culture? Why has your infinite style potential become so homogenized and common (plaid shirts, for example)?  What about the push for the contemporary and edgy and original?

Perhaps my own (limited) personal experience with hipsters has left me a bit sour on you, or I feel like you co-opted things that were original or new to my generation (prepsters, for instance), or I have just grossly generalized you to such an extent that I can't see the forest for the trees but what I do see is so much potential that its unfathomable. I don't want to see it get lost in the mire. I want it to come bursting forth and shower over the world. I sense the change in you, Generation Y, the change that a future brings. Please step up and bring it: the newness, the difference, the individuality. I'm doing my part. Other members of my generation are do their part as well.I know some of you are doing your share as well. I guess this is my summit, my "Geneva Convention" in my mind here, and its just time to meet and shake hands and know each other and welcome each party to the Dawn.
